About

Abel Tesfaye, who performs under the moniker The Weeknd, emerged shrouded in mystery in 2012, when he uploaded three tracks to YouTube that picked up near-immediate buzz -- despite the fact that nothing was known about the artist who posted them.

The tracks eventually got the attention of fellow Toronto artist Drake, who linked to the songs via his blog. Before the year was out, the songs were getting great write-ups on the music-hipster bible Pitchfork and in The New York Times.

The Weeknd followed up the next year with three mixtapes -- House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echos of Silence-- that served to ramp up his profile further. In the midst of the critical kudos, he made his first concert performances, including collaborations with Drake. The three mixtapes eventually became the first Weeknd album, 2011's Trilogy.

The Weeknd's sound has been described as hipster R&B (or PBR&B to some), and his tracks have sampled a huge range of artists from indie-rockers Beach House to R&B megastar Rihanna. His slow grooves and falsetto croon create a beautiful and sometimes creepy backdrop for what are often sexually-charged lyrics.

On tour, Tesfaye re-creates his recorded music with some live backing musicians' help and usually can be counted on to bring an eye-popping light show. Fans consistently give Tesfaye kudos for the quality and depth of his live vocals.

Abel’s lyricism and vocals are out of this world. He truly connects his music to his fans in such a way that amazing- which is an understatement. He’s the artist of our generation and his music truly speaks to me. I am glad he is not doing crazy dance choreography because that would absolutely take away from that beautiful voice of his. My husband and I saw him in Philly in July of 2022 for his AHTD tour. It was one of our best experiences of our lives together as a couple. I left a piece of my heart at that concert. I cannot recommend Abel enough to my friends and family. We love everything his is. We love that he does not bring politics and outside opinions into his music, concerts, or social media. I think listening to music should be getting away from all the outside ‘noise’ of the world. We can just appreciate him as a human being for his talent. Under the radar he is an extremely giving person and we love that he does not brag or boast about money he’s given to charities. He’s just an absolutely extraordinary human being and I cannot wait to see him for his new tour in 2025.

I went to see Abel July 2022 for his after hours till Dawn tour at met life. I gotta say, his angelic voice is worth hearing in concert. He knows how to get an audience hyped. He always has live music and barely anything pre-recorded. He puts so much effort into stage production in terms of setlist, and the background! His stage goes all out on lighting so wear sunglasses or some eye protection! If he goes on tour for the new album I’m saving up.

  • Not a concert a spiritual experience fr

XO since 2011!!!! got to see him at Greek Theatre for his Kissland tour in 2013, at the forum for his Starboy tour in 2017, and twice at SoFi for After Hours till Dawn tour- now gonna try to get tickets for his one night at the Rosebowl! Every concert he puts on is on another level, he sounds even better live than in the studio and each concert has only been better than the last! It’s been amazing to watch him grow in his career and as a performer and I’m so grateful for that experience! Production, lighting, vocals, everything is incredible. AHTD tour was his best yet, it literally felt like a spiritual experience instead of a concert. The energy was incredible, the crowd was amazing, and Abel was legendary as per usual. I left a piece of my soul there that day lol. It was so good the first time I bought tickets again idc idc idc I love this man and hope I can get tickets for the Rose Bowl!!!! XOXOXOXOXO
