About

Smokey Robinson isn't just the former frontman of the Miracles, or the man behind several dozen R&B classics, or one of the key figures in the initial Motown movement. He isn’t just a National Medal of Arts award winner and an inductee in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. Robinson is additionally a fantastic live musician and still a great performer, with an energy and enthusiasm that is incredible given his nearly six decades of experience in the music industry. These days, his concerts are celebratory affairs, with multiple generations of fans coming together to enjoy one of the true legends of American R&B. In epic performances that often last over two hours, Robinson sings hits from his entire career, dating back to early Miracles hits like “I Second That Emotion,” right through to newer tracks like "Don't Know Why" and "Love Bath," off his most recent album, 2009’s appropriately titled Time Flies When You're Having Fun.

From humble beginnings growing up poor in the north end of Detroit, Robinson first brought the Miracles together in 1955, at the age of just 15. Five years later, the group signed to Motown Records, and its first hit single, "Shop Around," became the young label’s first million-selling record. Another 25 hits followed for the band, including "Mickey's Monkey," "I Second That Emotion," "Baby Baby Don't Cry," and the No. 1 hit "Tears of a Clown." Robinson, then vice-president of Motown, started recording on his own, leading to hits like "A Quiet Storm," "Cruisin'," and "Just to See Her." His 2009 album Time Flies When You're Having Fun hit No. 10 on the R&B charts, and tickets continue to sell out for his concert tours, as fans await the opportunity to see this living legend.

  • Backup singers gotta go!!

Smokey still has a voice and is able to deliver. He doesn’t need help. The backup singers were very pretty to look at but their singing was a real distraction. The duet that was sung in Spanish at the beginning of the show was cringeworthy. Every time that particular singer opened her mouth I had to cover my ears. Surely Smokey can do better. Usually backup singers elevate and accentuate songs. They bring value to a song. This was not the case. Smokey’s Angels (his orchestra) was great. The band was also great!!

Loved it But audience was so rude!! Holding up phones and yelling comments I felt sorry for Smokey having to sing to phones instead of smiling faces. But what do you expect at a casino?

I love going down memory lane, and I sure did with Smokey on Saturday. His new stuff is so good. I could have listened to him all night, and then some.

  • Disappointed

by Nostalgia on 12/17/24Gila River Resorts & Casinos - Wild Horse Pass - ChandlerRating: 2 out of 5

Was disappointed in the show. It was extremely difficult to understand the words of the songs and the narrative between songs. I only understood about a third of what was being said. The hip gyrating and crotch grabbing didn’t add much to the show. Based on my experience, I would be hard pressed to recommend.

Smokey was nothing short of amazing! He was on my bucket list and I’m so thankful I got to see him. The venue was ok, but the sound system was subpar. However the people were friendly and helpful.

  • Amazing as always!

At the age of 84, Smokey looks great and sounds fantastic! If you ever get the chance to see him live, I highly recommend it. This was my second time seeing him at this venue, and worth every penny - for both shows. As for the venue itself - NJPAC in Newark, NJ - it is definitely a place that I would recommend going to to see a show. The theater is not huge, so the acoustics are outstanding and you're likely to have a good seat no matter where it's located. The staff is friendly and accommodating as well :).
