  • Loved it!

by cmk on 12/28/24Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Prior to moving to WI (from NYC) and settling in to my farmette, at the juncture of County Roads P and Q, I thought Lake Woebegone was a fictional town. It didn’t take long for me to realize that Lake Woebegone is REAL. To include my favorite neighbor, Bob Hanson, a Norwegian Bachelor Farmer. I’d relocated when I accepted a job at Land’s End. At the time, LE sponsored “A Prarie Home Companion.” Garrison visited Dodgeville and performed live. I was smitten and became a loyal fan of the show. I was thrilled to see Garrison & Co at Town Hall. It was bittersweet to consider how much time had passed since I immersed myself in WI farm life, having come full circle and returned to NYC. I loved the show, the time travel that let me remember my old friends and 4-square farmhouse in Highland, WI, population….281 (? Aka not a lot.) My favorite was Garrison leading the audience singing “Silent Night.”

A long time fan of APHC, I totally enjoyed the December 16 performance at Town Hall. I have many fond memories of performance and Friday evening rehearsals at Town Hall, including the introduction of Chris Thile as eventual host. I admire GK's stamina. I especially enjoy the Royal Academy of Radio Actors - Fred Newman is my favorite.

  • How is he 82?!?!

by Sondra on 12/22/24Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Traveled from Florida for the Christmas show in NYC and it was well worth it!! Garrison Keillor was an extraordinary host and one of a kind storyteller. I’m in awe at his ability to entertain. Christine DiGiallonardo, Maria Jette, Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Richard Dworsky were fantastic!! Fred Newman and his sound effects are incredible!! There was an other vocalist from the opera but I can’t remember her name, also amazing!!

Old fashioned show that was just what I needed! Smart and beautifully executed. I LOVE Town Hall!

  • A uneven nostalgia trip

by Steven on 12/21/24Town Hall - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

I used to be a big fan of A Prairie Home Companion when it was being broadcast on the radio and I enjoyed seeing live performances several times when they would bring the show to New York City. Garrison Keillor is still a masterful storyteller, and his "News from Lake Wobegon"segment remains the highlight of this newly scripted (?) recreation of the radio show. However, on radio APHC ran a tight 2 hours with a short break in the middle. Last night's performance ran 2:50, with an intermission at the 90-minute mark, and it felt very long. The show would have been better if an editor had cut the material that was repetitious or just not very funny to bring the running length down to a more digestible 2 hours. Also, at age 82, Mr. Keillor's singing voice isn't what it used to be, and his material should have been better planned with that limitation in mind.

  • My Intro to A Prairie Home Companion

    by GigiGirl77 on 11/11/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Overall a fun show- if not a bit long. Some of the skits and stories tended to drag on a bit and go off of the rails at times. Garrison is a great story teller- even if he tended to drift a bit sometimes. The singers and songs were lovely- however the show was a bit long so we could have done with a few less songs. The sound effects gentlemen is so talented- however his acts tended to drag on a bit as well. The Woodruff Arts center is a lovely venue. Bar service is great. I would suggest having two concession stands instead of 1- as the line is always very long for snacks. Also the sound in the theater was a bit low and at times it was hard to catch every word.

  • Balm for the Wounded Soul

by Billie on 11/11/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Garrison Keillor’s 50th Anniversary Tour’s performance in Atlanta was the beautiful and soothing balm I needed after the election. At first I didn’t think I could sing those patriotic songs, but I found that singing them with tear-filled eyes felt good, despite my sadness at how this country that I love has been changed by extreme politics. Life will go on, though the future appears very dark and uncertain to me. Keillor’s stories and songs reminded me that I, too, am truly blessed. It was a lovely evening of healing shared with dear friends.

  • Good show but…..

by BamaGirlRT on 11/11/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

The Atlanta show was almost 3 hrs with intermission. Lots of singing, a few skits and of course an update from lake wobegon. Gave it only 4 stars because GK had his back to us most of the time. We set close to front, not cheap seats, left side. When he was singing, he always had his back to us which was half the program. When he was speaking, he was half turned away. Not sure why he does this but it’s a bit aggravating to see the backside of someone you paid good money to see. All n all, a good show, a bit risqué at times, nice sing a longs….good to see him again.
