Dallas Mavericks History

The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in the 1980–81 season, becoming the league’s third team in Texas, joining the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. The Mavericks struggled in their inaugural season, but quickly improved with Mark Aguirre, who became the franchise's first All-Star and took the team to their first playoff series in the 1983–84 season. The Mavericks went on to qualify for the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, culminating in a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1987–88. They came within one win of the NBA Finals, losing to the Lakers in seven games.

Dallas struggled throughout the '90s, but a new era began when the Mavericks acquired Dirk Nowitzki in 1998. Ownership of the team was sold to Mark Cuban in January of 2000. Cuban immediately began to revitalize the franchise, building around a central trio of Nowitzki, point guard Steve Nash and wing Michael Finley. In Cuban's inaugural year owning the Mavericks, they made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. This began a streak in which they qualified for the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons. In the 2011 NBA Finals, they defeated the HEAT in six games to win the only championship in franchise history.

Nowitzki retired in 2019 and passed the torch to Luka Dončić, who led the Mavericks to four straight playoff berths, including the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

  • Amazing night with the Mavs at AAC!

by Sarah AT on 11/25/24American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

I flew with my family (again!) from the Dominican Republic to watch 2 games of the Dallas Mavericks on Nov 16 and 19th. Both of my kids had their birthdays in November and we agreed this trip was their gift. We won both games and the Nov 19th one was even more special because it was my son's birthday as he wanted, watching his favorite team win! We also got jerseys, tshirts and jackets to take home from the Hangar. We just wish we lived closer so we could be here every week. We love the Mavs and the vibes at AAC, we feel like home. Go Mavs, there's a bright future ahead. This year we came in April and now in November, and we hope to be back very soon!!!

  • it's deflating when the star players are out

by yourmom on 11/19/24American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 2 out of 5

Wembanyama out as a game time decision, very heartbreaking when we paid a lot for these seats and have been looking forward to it. As for the experience, the concessions are crazy priced and the arena is so loud you need earplugs. Why do they think you need music or something blaring every second between game play?

  • A lovely experience

by Sudarshan Ov. on 11/16/24American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing. So much fun. As a fan attending a game live for the first time, this was an awesome experience. Wish they got the W, but it’s cool. Stadium was great. Food is overpriced, lots of fun merchandise to buy. Overall, would do it again if I could.

  • Great Amenities Experience

by GeorgeD on 11/11/24American Airlines Center - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The Mavs have an exciting team with at least 3 future Hall of Famers worth seeing. The electricity felt from the fans throughout arena was amazing, loud and energetic. A great variety of concessions, suites and lounges with many options (Even a dessert bar). The seat I had was roomy enough for me to stretch my long legs. Between timeouts the announcer kept the crowd engaged. All staff members smiled and very helpful. Entering the arena was swift and no backup lines right before the game. Mavs won. $$$ well spent.
