Detroit Lions Team History

The Detroit Lions haven't always been the Lions. In 1934, George A. Richards, a radio executive, purchased the Spartans, a team from Portsmouth, Ohio. After the $8,000 purchase (a huge sum at that time), he moved the team to Detroit. In only their second year as the Detroit Lions, the team won the 1935 NFL championship, beating the New York Giants 26-7 at the University of Detroit Stadium.

During the 1950s, the Lions enjoyed some of the most successful seasons in their history, winning three league championships against the Cleveland Browns in 1952, 1953 and 1957. Divisional titles came again in 1991 and 1993.

Detroit Lions at Ford Field

The 65,000-capacity Ford Field consists of 1.85 million square feet and has four levels of suites, a level of club seating, and a ground level designated for concessions and retail. It also has some of the best sight lines of any football stadium in the United States, made available by a design that omits the traditional club and suite levels, thereby lowering the upper level.

In 2017, the Detroit Lions announced a $100 million investment into stadium renovations. Updates to The New Ford Field included a complete overhaul of Ford Field's audio/visual guest experience with new video boards to ensure easy viewing for fans in all corners of the stadium, an upgraded sound system, as well as renovated stadium suites and premium club areas.

  • Great Day for my Autistic Grandson

    by Patty A on 1/2/25Rating: 5 out of 5

Took my 10 year old grandson to his first game. Security was amazing and allowed us to sit in the front line to enter without a large crowd from the back of the stadium near parking structure. Was able to walk around and see things prior to the game and get a feel for the stadium. We also used the sensory room and the staff was very accommodating and understanding of my grandsons needs. He said it was the best day ever. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing my grandson to feel “normal” only thing he said was , how do we get a sideline pass to meet the players?

  • Good to Excellent

I am curious as to why the Ticketmaster schedule of games shows the Lions vs. Vikings as a TBD date? The game as far as I know is January 5, 2025, Sunday...it should be listed as such?

  • Great game and great Service

by JLo on 12/8/24Ford Field - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Versus the Packers, our family had high expectations for the night. We got there early, got cool free stuff, ate early and hit seated. One of my family members is temporarily in a wheel chair and everyone help her out and made things smooth for her. The game was great and the stadium is hopping every single minute. While the ticket prices were pretty high, we got a very full evening and great game! Great job Lions and Ford Field organizations!

  • Unforgettable

by Bean Crawford on 11/28/24Rating: 5 out of 5

My wife purchased tickets for my son, my father and myself at the end of 22' season when we played Minnesota and beat Minnesota and it was just the beginning of this great run that we've been on and it was the most incredible experience of my life. I lost my father to cancer 3 months later but that experience at Ford field was one that I will forever cherish. It was all of our first time at Ford field and everything from the parking to walking the stadium to all the concessions was so conveniently placed that you have no choice but to just have a great experience and enjoy Ford Field no matter what event you're there for. Will continue to go back whenever possible.

  • It's the Lion's Year!

by Tracy on 11/14/24Ford Field - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Traveled from Seattle to see the Lions absolutely destroy the Titans. Ford Field is a great venue - clean, tons of food and drinks options, and the seating provides enough space. I especially love the fact it's enclosed and the fans really support that increased decibel level! Will definitely come back to see the team! Go Lions go!
