Detroit Pistons History

One of the most storied franchises in NBA history, the Pistons moved to Detroit in 1957 from Fort Wayne, Indiana, where they were owned by Fred Zollner and known as the Fort Wayne (Zollner) Pistons. The Pistons played at Olympia Stadium for four years, then moved to Cobo Arena. In 1974, Bill Davidson purchased the team, and in 1978, he moved them to play at the Pontiac Silverdome.

Prior to the start of the 1988–89 season, the Pistons moved to play at The Palace of Auburn Hills and won back-to-back NBA Championships in 1989 and 1990 with the "Bad Boys" teams. Detroit's "Goin' to Work" squad picked up the franchise's third NBA Championship in 2004 in the midst of making six consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference Finals.

In addition to the numerous team accomplishments, the Pistons also have had a list of great players and coaches who have contributed to the team's long history of success. Detroit has retired jersey numbers for Chuck Daly (2), Isiah Thomas (11), Joe Dumars (4), Dave Bing (21), Bob Lanier (16), Dennis Rodman (10), Vinnie Johnson (15), Bill Laimbeer (40), Ben Wallace (3), Chauncey Billups (1) and Richard Hamilton (32). Daly, Thomas, Dumars, Bing, Lanier, Rodman and Davidson all have been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

  • Great evening out in Detroit

by Not a basketball fan on 1/6/25Little Caesars Arena - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Had family in from out of town over the holidays and was looking for entertainment options. Found some very reasonable tickets for 10 of us and came down to the game. We were able to come in the LCA about 70 minutes before the game, after walking around the arena neighborhood for about an hour. Everything was open, was clean and everyone was really friendly and helpful. There was music on the concourse and we had a great time with some snacks and drinks warming up. To our seats, we had a great view, easy access to the concessions and again very helpful staff. As people who are not big basketball fans, the upper level prices were reasonable and it offered us a place to be for about 3.5-4 hours on a really cold winter weekend night. Highly recommend.

  • Great Experience

by BigMerk on 1/4/25Little Caesars Arena - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Very welcoming and engaging venue. Tons to do for the whole family. Seats were great, energy was great. Only negative is that you don’t accept cash. Loading cash to a card is very tedious and takes away from the experience.

  • Pistons vs 76ers

by Vee on 12/3/24Little Caesars Arena - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

We have ordered pizza and nachos with the meat. We had hamburger meat. Everything was fresh and good spent about $50 on food and drinks. Pistons lost the game but we still had a good time with the entertainment.
