Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as center and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final eight times.

Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place

NHL superstar Connor McDavid and NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier opened the doors to the spectacular Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton in October 2016. McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers bring excitement to Rogers Place nightly, with the statue of The Great One standing guard just outside. The state-of-the-art Rogers Place replaced the aging Rexall Place, and resulted in an explosion of business and residential growth in downtown's ICE District.

  • Enjoyable Experience

I've never been a hockey fan but recently started dating one. I watched a few videos on YouTube of Snoop Dogg explaining the rules to me the night before going to the game. Even with little knowledge of the sport, I had an awesome time. Being in the stands and the atmosphere/vibes from the fans and the music - it was an exciting and enjoyable night (especially after the Oilers won). Rogers place was big and there were a lot of places to buy drinks and snacks and the bathrooms were easily accessible. It didn't take too long to get through security too. I liked that they had 4 "No Bags - Express Lines"as well. The only reason for 4 stars is because of the price of literally everything. $30 for 2 cans of twisted teas and $300+ for a Jersey 😭 Our tickets were pretty pricey as well but I think that one is just to be expected these days (unfortunately).

First time at an NHL game. Was as busy as expected, and the normal issues with big events. But staff kept everything moving smoothly, and facilities were clean and upkept.

  • Exciting game, but prices keep you sober

    by Rja13 on 11/17/24Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Spectacle and quality of hockey is high, facility is nice other than men’s bathroom line ups. Beers and food prices are outpacing inflation

  • Simply umbelievable

I am a huge fan of Edmonton Oilers since 2014/2015 season. I came to Edmonton from Europe to attend 3 NHL games of the Oilers. I can asure all you that it was totally worth it. Even when the Oilers are losing their loyal fans never give up and support their team all the way through. Even tough they lost 2 games it was still quite good. But when they finally won the 3rd one against Flyers Oilers it was arguably the most exciting and probably the very best experience I have witnessed in all of my life when it comes to live hockey game. To sum up, simply put it was an incredible atmosphere thanks to their amazing fans and obviouly best players in the world. If you are in Edmonton you should definitely take an Oiler game on your list. You won't regret.

  • Boring and over-priced

by JL on 10/15/24Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 1 out of 5

The Oilers' performance was awful, and to be honest, the team's players should reimburse us a percentage of the cost of our tickets. I suspect that their salaries are (partly) reflected in ticket prices - am I wrong about this? In the end, it felt like I flushed a bunch of money down the toilet. Beyond this, Rogers Place is always over-priced (food, beer, merch). The fans in our section, though, were great! It was funny watching the McDavid army stream out of the building with 5 minutes to go in the game. Caveat emptor - I guess.
