Memphis Grizzlies History

As the Vancouver Grizzlies, the team joined the NBA in 1995 along with the Toronto Raptors as the league expanded to Canada. The Grizzlies’ early struggles — six consecutive seasons with no more than 23 victories — hurt attendance. Ownership found open arms in Memphis, and moved the franchise there in 2001.

The first year in Memphis, they drafted forward Pau Gasol, who would go on to win NBA Rookie of the Year, become the franchise's first All-Star and, eventually, the Grizzlies' all-time leading scorer and rebounder. In 2002, the Grizzlies brought on Jerry West as general manager, and the franchise reversed course. In the 2003–04 season, they posted a winning record, making the playoffs for the first of three consecutive seasons.

A four-year absence followed, but sparked by Zach Randolph, Rudy Gay, and Mike Conley, and helmed by coach Lionel Hollins, the Grizzlies returned to the playoffs in the 2010–11 season, upsetting the San Antonio Spurs in the first round before losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games in the conference semifinals. It was the first of seven consecutive playoff appearances for the “Grit and Grind” Grizzlies.

The 2020–21 season saw the Grizzlies finish the season with a winning record (38-34) and win two play-in games to clinch the eighth seed in the Western Conference. Following the 2022–23 season, power forward Jaren Jackson Jr. won the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Memphis Grizzlies at FedExForum

The Grizzlies have called FedExForum home since 2004, three years after the franchise relocated to Memphis from Vancouver. Those first three seasons, the Grizzlies played in the Pyramid, but the landmark venue needed costly upgrades to meet NBA standards. Construction of a $250 million arena was found to be more feasible.

The dome-shaped venue on Memphis' historic Beale Street pays homage to the city's rich music history, boasting murals, photographs and themed restaurants and clubs throughout. FedExForum has undergone several renovations since its initial construction, including a state-of-the-art, high-definition scoreboard and video screen installed in 2017. The arena was also the first in the NBA to have "see-through" shot clocks, so fans’ views of the court were not obstructed.

  • Go Grizzlies: a new fan's perspective

by HankCarter on 11/22/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

OK, here's the deal...I just moved to Memphis three months ago, and I had always wanted to see a show at the Forum. I knew the Grizzlies have always had trouble, but I wanted to see them anyway. When I got to the Forum until I left after the game, I was treated to what I would call a family-friendly block party. A live pre-game band, a halftime drumline, Neely's barbecue, and giveaways? I was very impressed and enjoyed myself thoroughly. I highly recommend seeing a Grizzlies game at the Forum to any Memphian who wants a relatively inexpensive way to enjoy a break from Beale Street partying!

  • Very Impressive

by Ecass on 11/15/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 4 out of 5

The Grizzlies performed better than I expected, I was so poud of them. I bought tickets because I wanted to see Allen Iverson play, I am very disappointed. I will not purchase anymore tickets since he is not on the team, I'll wait to see them on TV. When and if Iverson returns, I'll purchase tickets.

  • Grizzlies - Trailblazers

Game was off to a slow start. Ended up showcasing defense.

  • memphis grizzlies are great!

by braxtonlaura on 11/3/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 4 out of 5

We enjoyed the game and everything was so easy. I do wish there were more than just the team store to purchase items. My family agrees that it is fun to have booths around to buy items. We sat in section 110, so we didn't roam much this time. But all-in-all, we had a great time.

  • grizs vs pis

by lunz on 11/2/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 4 out of 5

the griz could be great if they would move without the ball. the offense looked stagnant. gasol is a power down low and has great potential if devloped right. overall i think the grizs has a possible great future.

  • Detroit at Memphis

by SLynnF on 10/29/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time at the game! Loved the new look of Marc Gasol, and loved watching O J Mayo and Rudy Gay play! One thing I wish, is that they would play more as a team.

  • Entertainment was great....

    by Brian38119 on 10/29/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 3 out of 5

The entertainment for this season-opening game of the Grizzlies was great! The game itself seemed more like an overhyped college team playing...but it is the Memphis Grizzlies, so you can't really expect much, right?

  • Grannys and Granpas were the best!!!!

by msmea on 10/29/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 3 out of 5

I enjoyed the entertainment, the seats were horrible

  • by Anonymous on 10/29/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 3 out of 5

the forum is very nice, the grizzlies aren't very good - or very entertaining. luckily the mini-shows were decent (including the grannies & gramps and jabowakeez). and it would be REAL nice your Will Call had kiosks (like in a movie theatre) that allowed you to manually verify your tickets and print them out.

  • very nice

  • Why was Iverson not playing

    by Bird1 on 10/29/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 2 out of 5

I am a true Grizzlie fan so that is why I attended the event. The games are always fun except for the fact that we rarely win. Every chance I get I go to the games, but its disappointing for them to lose and by such a big gap. I really was disappointed not to see Iverson in the game. On the Grizzlie rooster we have great team, but they need more them work.

  • by droeber on 10/29/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

The Grizzlies did not play very well but the event was great.

  • We're in this Together!!

by Bethisafan on 10/29/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

So we didn't win - oh well. It was great to see all the fans come out and show support. I think the organization has done a good job of promoting the team this season, and I hope the fan base will maintain what it was last night. The entertainment, the excitement from the crowd, and the play was all fun. I loved being there.

  • Pre Season

Had a great time but the game was really dead. Seats were ok. Its really hard to get a bad seat at The FedEx Forum

  • MAYO*GAY*YOUNG; IMPRESSIVE COMBINATION

    by BABYGIRL62100 on 10/13/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 4 out of 5

OJ MAYO AND RUDY GAY WERE AMAZING AS USUAL, BUT THIS SAM YOUNG WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE TO ME. I AM NOT VERY FAMILIAR WITH HIM, BUT HE GOT MY ATTENTION LAST NIGHT. THERE WERE A FEW CALLS THAT SHOULD HAVE GONE THE GRIZZLIES WAY BUT DIDN'T. I REALLY DID ENJOY THE GAME AND SO DID MY KIDS (AGES 9-7-3). THE GAME WAS FULL OF SPECTACULAR PLAYS; SUCH AS THE ALLEY OOP AND SLAM DUNK BY GAY. OJ SHOWED OUT AS USUAL. I CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN TO THE FORUM VERY SOON.

  • Great time at the Grizzlies game

    by JOVA10 on 10/8/09FedExForum - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I had a great time at the Grizzlies game. The people were friendly and all of the staff made a point to welcome us to the arena. We will definitely be making more trips to see the Grizz.
