New York Red Bulls History

Born as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, the New York Red Bulls have been with Major League Soccer from the inaugural season in 1996. Some of the biggest names in soccer have worn the colors of the MetroStars/Red Bulls, including the team's first player Tab Ramos, who doubled as the league’s first-ever signee. Also among New York alumni are U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team players Tony Meola, Tim Howard, Jozy Altidore, Claudio Reyna, and Clint Mathis. The Red Bulls have also boasted international talent from the likes of German great Lothar Matthäus in 2000, and French superstar Thierry Henry, who played 135 matches with the team to close out his playing career in 2014.

New York reached its first MLS Cup finals match in 2008 but fell to the Columbus Crew 3-1. The franchise hit a hot streak between 2010 to 2018 when the Red Bulls finished atop the Eastern Conference five times. Within that period, New York claimed three Supporters’ Shields and advanced to their second U.S. Open Cup final in 2017, where they were defeated by Sporting Kansas City, 2-1. Individually, striker Bradley Wright-Phillips earned Golden Boots in 2014 and 2016, while Luis Robles was awarded Goalkeeper of the Year in 2015.

  • Expensive

by Redd on 12/17/24Rating: 3 out of 5

Let's go over the costs for two people attending.... $20 for parking on a dirt ditch that gets muddy on a rainy day. About $40 for ONE round of food (no snacks or drinks). $100 average ticket price ($50 each person). So, you're already at about almost $200 and I haven't mentioned buying souvenir's or gifts. Outside of the NYCFC and Union games, the crowd is dead.

  • Five missed chances!

by Hauke on 9/3/24Red Bull Arena - HarrisonRating: 4 out of 5

Great game with lots of missed opportunities. Would have liked to have seen our German coach as the winner. Very good atmosphere!

  • Lack of fans & atmosphere…

by Bart on 7/23/24Red Bull Arena - HarrisonRating: 3 out of 5

The stadium is nice, the food is good but where are the fans?? Where is the passion and dedication like you see with Baseball, Basketball of American Football? As if you guys are watching a movie. Despite a few diehard fans (less then a 100), it was quite all evening… We had a great experience and fun evening as it was our first soccer match in the USA but I really miss the passion like I have seen with matches in Italy, Germany and The Netherlands (our home country). I really hope NY Red Bulls will become a team from the fans and not from the money…

  • Thunder

by Mmm on 7/20/24Red Bull Arena - HarrisonRating: 3 out of 5

Unfortunately due to poor weather, our group of 52 students and staff from the UK, had to leave at half time due to a thunder and lightning storm.

  • getting a point from game

Sometimes a tie feels like a loss sometimes it seems like a win. With up a man Red bulls should have pressed harder for a win.

  • Game great, Parking and inbound traffic a total nightmare

    by bridom1106 on 3/13/24Red Bull Arena - HarrisonRating: 3 out of 5

The parking situation at Red Bull stadium is atrocious. The "gravel lot"aka mud pit requires hours of waiting to enter and exit. I would LOVE to take public transportation, however that is only convenient from the urban centers. From Jersey towns and neighborhoods, public transportation would require taking a local train to Secaucus or Hoboken, transfer to a train to Newark, and then transfer to the PATH train, for a total of 2.5 hours, best case scenario, which maybe on the way there is justifiable? But certainly not to get home. Since driving is the only real option for us suburbanites, they really need to improve the local traffic policing and patterns. There are a series of impossible left turns that require everyone to wait in agonizing lines both coming and going. The stadium and game experience are truly awesome and a great family experience, it's too bad the commute there and back is insufferable.

  • Football is the best in the world

by 100% Red Bulls on 3/12/24Red Bull Arena - HarrisonRating: 5 out of 5

The Red Bulls is the best team in the whole MLS and me and my family enjoyed being there especially on their opening game which was spectacular 🤩

  • They know how to put on a show..

by Antony on 11/13/23Red Bull Arena - HarrisonRating: 5 out of 5

They know how to put on a show.. Everything was highly efficient and speedy: security, ticket-scanning and food/drink stands. Lots of UK clubs could learn a lot from this. Crowd were very enthusiastic and involved. I know it was the last game of the season, so it could have been a one-off, but I was very impressed with the large amount of time that the players interacted with the supporters who waited around after the match for photographs and autographs. When I can, I will go again.
