Activision's Skylanders given a run for its money in December

Disney Infinity sells 3m starter sets

Disney’s gaming unit has found a rare hit in its new Infinity series of toys and games, having sold 3 million starter packs since hitting store shelves on August 18.

Infinity rang in at number ten on the latest NPD monthly report, prompting Disney Interactive president Jimmy Pitaro to reveal the sales figure to the New York Times.

“We’re thrilled that families and gamers alike have embraced Disney Infinity,” said Pitaro, who added that sales had exceeded internal expectations.

“We believe we’ve set the stage for Infinity to be an enduring video game platform.”

The Infinity series is a direct rival to Activision’s Skylanders line of toys games and, though it certainly hasn’t beaten its more established rival, it’s certainly putting up a good fight.

The NPD sales figures for December, released on Thursday, put the newly released Skylanders: Swap Force at 597,000 units for the month. That compares favorably for newcomer Disney Infinity, which managed to sell 551,000 units.

The success of Disney Infinity was credited with raising Disney Interactive’s financial fortunes by 107 percent year over year for Q4 2013.
