Quick guide to the games events taking place in Scotland over the coming days

Industry turns to Edinburgh this week

Despite being in the middle of the summer, when most people take time off, August is a busy month for the games industry.

Next week sees the inaugural Gamescom and GDC Europe take place in Cologne, Germany – but first the industry turns its attention to Edinburgh.

There are two major events taking place amongst the wider Edinburgh Festival celebrating the creative arts.

The first is the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, which takes place on August 13th and 14th at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange.

EIF has EA Sports boss Peter Moore as keynote, with other sessions set to explore things like ‘the death of the blockbuster game’ and the viability of a games tax break.

The day after EIF starts, however, attentions turn to the younger, fresher and arguably more creative part of the games industry for Dare to be Digital’s ProtoPlay event.

ProtoPlay offers both the industry and consumers the chance to play the 14 games developed as part of the Dare to be Digital student design competition.

It runs from August 14th to 16th at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre and offers the chance to sample a raft of original ideas that involve new interfaces and concepts from student teams.
