For any readers who might not know, tell us a little more about your company and its goal.
As one of Europe’s leading game development studios, Sumo is passionate about creating innovative, high quality games with the highest production values.
The studio has an enviable track record, developing games across all consoles and genres with high profile franchises including Dead Island, Crackdown and LittleBigPlanet.
Founded in 2003, Sumo has grown from the initial 12 people to over 300 across its HQ in Sheffield, its studio in India and most recently a third studio in Nottingham.
What differentiates you from similar outfits? What’s unique about you?
The versatility of our projects and skill sets. The wide variety of genres that Sumo works within demands a level of creativity and reliability beyond the remit of most studios.
As a team, we have been through several console generations, giving us a wealth of experience; we believe in our people and strive to help them be the best they can be.
What excites you about the games industry and games development today?
The rise in prominence of ‘indie’ development has drastically increased the surprise factor of games.
With tools like Unreal and Unity being freely available, we’re seeing a new generation of game developers emerge with so many interesting ideas and the power to bring them to life.
Equally, large teams and big budgets also have their place in continuing to create great AAA entertainment.
What do you think the line-up of this year’s Develop Awards finalists says about the industry today?
I think the list of finalists this year showcases just how much the industry has evolved and matured over the past few years. We’re seeing triple-A titles competing in the same space as some incredibly compelling indie games.
There is such a wide variety of talent on show, both in terms of nominated games and the developers behind them, that it’s inspirational to see and we’re pleased to be able to support our fellow developers.
Do you have a message for the finalists?
Be proud of what you’ve created and what you’ve accomplished. To be placed as a finalist in such a competitive industry is an achievement in itself.
