The Game Awards announces its 2018 nominees

The Game Awards has announced the games shortlisted for its 2018 awards later this year.

God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 come out on top with eight nominations each, with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Detroit: Become Human, Monster Hunter: World and Destiny 2: Forsaken all shortlisted, too.

"This year more than 100 games and individuals have been nominated for The Game Awards," a statement said. "You can vote once every 24 hours, and if you share your vote it receives an extra boost in our winner formula. Winners will be announced live on December 6th at The Game Awards."

Destiny 2: Forsaken (Bungie/Activision), Fortnite (Epic Games), No Man’s Sky (Hello Games), Overwatch (Blizzard), and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege (Ubisoft Montreal/Ubisoft) are all vying for Best Ongoing Game, while A Way Out (Hazellight Studios/EA), Detroit: Become Human (Quantic Dream/SIE), God of War (Sony Santa Monica/SIE), Marvel’s Spider-Man (Insomniac Games/SIE) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar Games) are in line for Best Game Direction.

The Games for Impact shortlist includes 11-11 Memories Retold (Digixart/Aardman Animations/Bandai Namco Entertainment), Celeste (Matt Makes Games), Florence (Mountains), Life is Strange 2: Episode 1 (Dontnod Entertainment/Square Enix), and The Missing: JJ Macfield and the Island of Memories (White Owls/Arc System Works). MeanwhileCeleste (Matt Makes Games), Dead Cells (Motion Twin), Into the Breach (Subset Games), Return of the Obra Dinn (3909 LLC) and The Messenger (Sabotage Studio) are up for Best Independent Game.

Mobile games are also given a chance to shine. This year, Donut County (Ben Esposito/Annapurna Interactive), Florence (Mountains), Fortnite (Epic Games), PUBG Mobile (Lightspeed & Quantum/Tencent Games) and Reigns: Game of Thrones (Nerial/Devolver Digital) are shortlisted for Best Mobile Game.

The Game Awards "celebrates the best video games and esports of the year, and world premieres the most anticipated games of the future". Its fifth award ceremony is set to take place next month. Last week, it was announced Tencent’s senior vice president, Steven Ma was appointed to its advisory board.
