Bandai Namco has revealed Tori, a brand new create-and-play “augmented interaction ecosystem” that looks set to rival Nintendo’s Labo playsets. Compatible with both iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, the first Tori Explorer Pack will release on October 2nd, 2019, along with five related apps on Google Play and the App Store. Further apps and toys will be added “over time”.
Bandai has collaborated with “leading pioneer in augmented interaction” company ISKN, which states it has “60 years of deep tech R&D expertise”. The teaser below shows the tech in action and illustrates how toys and creations can come to life:
“Leveraging the breakthrough Mirror Play, the perfect combination of the augmented interaction solution powered by ISKN with latest cutting edge technologies, Tori makes children’s creations come magically alive and have their every move instantly reflected in the supported apps,” a press release states. “By using their Tori Wand, Tori Catapult and Tori Spacecraft over the tTori board, children can break down the barriers between their imagination and reality to open a world full of fun and creativity.”
“We’ve always imagined our augmented interaction technology as a user-friendly means to spark creativity and emotion,” said Timothée Jobert, ISKN co-founder & CXO. “Collaborating with Bandai Namco was the opportunity to bring fun, magic and imagination to everyone.”
“We believe in creative, playful and active methods that develop activities where problem solving, creativity and concentration are at heart,” added Herve Hoerdt, SVP of marketing, digital & content at Bandai Namco. “In such regard, Tori allows kids to have fun and express their personality through creative and interactive experiences with a perfect balance between on and off-screen time.”
As yet, there’s no confirmation of a recommended price-point, but keep an eye on tori.com for more information.
