Fnatic have dropped their CS:GO academy team after several tournament organisers have started to make noises about multiple-team ownership.
Last week, the team secured a spot in the European CIS Minor, which acts as a pre-qualifier for the PGL Kraków major, which Fnatic’s core team have already qualified for. PGL have said that multi-team ownership is okay, but the team would need to rebrand, and as a result Fnatic Academy are going to be looking for a new home, instead of just rebadging.
This could also be a reaction to several organisations, including ESL and WESA stating that esports organisations won’t be able to field two teams at the same event, declaring that teams would have to sell their academy/secondary teams if this was the case, so it isn’t just this tournament that Fnatic and their academy roster would have to worry about, but several future events.
Fnatic Academy has proven successful since being acquired by Fnatic last year. They’ve placed well at international LAN events, and in December last year they won $71,000 in Shenzen, China at the China Top event.
The team will continue onwards, under a new name that hasn’t yet been announced, at the European Minor.
