Overwolf – with the support of Intel – has announced a $7 million (£5.5m) pot of funding, available for developers creating apps, mods, or game services to be placed on the Overwolf platform.
Those selected to be awarded funds will receive between $10k (£7.8k) and $500k (£390k), depending on specific needs and requirements of the project – as well as its potential value. Anyone with a project can apply, though of course not everybody will be awarded cash.
“We continuously look for opportunities to help developers create awesome experiences that make today’s top games even more fun to play,” said Uri Marchand, CEO at Overwolf, “We’ve designed the fund’s evaluation process to be simple and fast so that developers can focus 100% of their efforts on making the best possible application, mod or game extension.”
“Intel has long committed to delivering the most compelling gaming experiences running on Intel® architecture,” said John Bonini, VP, GM of VR, Esports and Gaming at Intel, “Our collaboration with Overwolf further extends our ability to empower a new generation of developers to create compelling, exciting gaming software.”
The first round of funding will begin in 2019, and cash will initially be awarded in grant form. Should an app become monetised once complete, the grant will become repayable via revenue sharing on the Overwolf platform. Even part-time devs have been invited to apply, with there being no expectation that work on the app will be a full time deal.
The Overwolf platform is home to in-game extensions providing functionality you might otherwise have to exit the game to utilise – such as web browsing, or instant messaging. The company has previously worked alongside the likes of Wargaming, Teamspeak, and EA.
