Xbox and Blizzard go dog mad for Chinese New Year

2018 is the Year of the Dog and some of your favourite game companies are taking full advantage of the opportunity by dressing up their canine companions. Xbox has gathered some powerful pups, complete with punny names, to celebrate the platform’s biggest franchises. Of particular note are the silly dogfaces known as Pug-G, Fur-za and the piratey puppy Sea Of Fleas. No, you’re not going crazy. This is actually happening.

You can see all of Xbox’s wonderful woofers in the video below:

Meanwhile, Blizzard hosted an event on Twitch which will “go down in esports history”, according to hosts Mitch “Uber” Leslie and Rachel Quirico. The Overwatch Puppy Rumble is a two-hour show not dissimilar to Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl, with dogs cosplaying as your favourite Overwatch heroes battling it out in a capture-the-flag arena. Complete with Overwatch League style shoutcasting.

Take some time out of your day to watch these Colonel Woofingtons ignore the objectives and focus on takedowns, making this a truly authentic Overwatch normal match.

Hopefully this won’t be the last we see of dogs participating in the world of games, since we have a full Year of the Dog to make the most of. And once that’s over, you can check back next year for piggy playtime as the industry celebrates the Year of the Pig. We can’t wait to see the real Roadhog in action.

Every month MCV celebrates the industry’s pets in our regular feature Paws The Game. If you’re interested in submitting your studio or office’s four legged furry friends (four legs not required), then you can submit pics and info to jalexander@nbmedia.com.
