Oakland games outfit Wavedash Games has announced that it’s raised $6m in Series A funding to develop a new platform fighting game, and grow its team.
A platform fighter is a fighting game that revolves around victory by knocking your opponent out of an arena. Think of your chosen Smash Bros game, and you’re most of the way there.
Wavedash was founded by developers from Blizzard, EA and Riot Games, and the pedigree was enough to convince Wavedash Games to lead the round of funding, with additional funding from Lowercase Capital, Advancit Capital, CourtsideVC, Machine Shop Ventures, Luma Labs, and Cherrytree VC.
The studio also have involvement from community leaders from Nintendo’s Smash Bros. series, and for some reason Linkin Park DJ and Programmer Joe Hahn is also involved in an advisory capacity.
“The Platform Fighter community is one of the most vibrant in gaming,” said Matt Fairchild, Wavedash’s CEO and Co-Founder. “But it has yet to reach its full potential. We’re following the trail blazed by Riot Games and Valve by bringing community passion together with world class developer talent.”
Wavedash have an enthusiasm for growing the genre both in terms of its global popularity and also its role on the esports stage. Waveform’s forthcoming game, currently untitled, will be free-to-play and will aim to follow the business models seen in MOBA’s rather than that seen in traditional FGC titles.
Gregory Milken, Partner and Co-Founder, March Capital Partners commented: “Despite massive growth in esports as a whole in recent years, the market has yet to really effectively tackle Platform Fighters. The passion of Jason, Matt, and their team really shines through, and we look forward to working with them on the development of Wavedash.”
Gameplay will be revealed for the first time this summer, according to Wavedash.
