NRG Esports acquires Canadian esports outfit Northern Gaming

Northern Gaming has been acquired by NRG Esports, Northern Gaming’s CEO Mike Maring has announced.

Northern Gaming have had a rollercoaster ride, forming in Toronto last year and signing a roster of notable streamers, in addition to a Rocket League team that won June’s world championships. While Northern Gaming parted ways with the Rocket League roster last week, the rest of the organisation will now be absorbed into NRG’s brand.

Maring said that while Northern Gaming had been an ‘exciting chapter in all of our lives’, NRG provided ‘unrivalled opportunity’.

Maring will be staying with the organisation, moving into a position as assistant general manager of gaming within NRG. Chance ‘Sodapoppin’ Morris, a streamer for Northern Gaming with over 1.5m followers on Twitch, will become an owner and advisor at NRG, in addition to streaming for the company.

While Northern Esports was only a year old, NRG isn’t much older. It was founded by the co-owners of NBA team Sacramento Kings in 2015, and has investment from Washington, D.C and Shaquille O’Neal.

There’s no information on how much money was behind the deal.
