Gfinity set to host the Gillette Championship, a £15,000 PES tournament

Today Gfinity and Gillette have announced the Gillette Championship, a Pro Evolution Soccer tournament with a £15,000 prize pool.

The competition will see the best players of Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 on PS4 battle it out across 24 qualifiers and a live finals that will be held in London.

The first stage of the competition will feature 24 separate qualifiers, one for each country in the tournament. Winning a country’s qualifier will mean that you have to use that country during the finals, so if you end up winning the England qualifier you use England in the game at the finals. Anyone can take part in any of the qualifiers, but once you have won one you cannot enter any more, meaning coming first in the Albanian qualifier will cost you a shot at the German qualifier.

This presents an interesting meta already for the competition. Will the best players skip the earlier qualifiers that feature some of the lesser teams in the hopes of securing a top team further down the line, or will they be eager to book a place at the Gfinity Arena as soon as possible?

We won’t have to wait long to find out as the first qualifier kicks off on Wednesday 8th June. Players will be competing for a slot at the finals where the winner will be playing as Northern Ireland. A new qualifier will then take place every day, until the final one takes place on July 1st, where the winner will be playing as Germany. The England qualifier takes place on June 29th.

After the qualifiers conclude all 24 winners will head to the Gfinity Arena on July 8th and 9th to battle it out for the lion’s share of the £15,000.
