Street Fighter V is looking all set for a strong opening year in the competitive scene after breaking Evo’s registration records only four days after they began.
Last year’s sign-ups saw the highest number of entrants to a single discipline as Ultra Street Fighter IV received 2,227 registrations ahead of the Las Vegas competition.
The numbers for this year have not been revealed yet, and will continue to rise as Evo Championship organiser Joey Cuellar has stated there will be no cap for the SFV tournament.
Though still taking place in the usual Las Vegas setting, the competition this year is split across two venues on the weekend of July 15-17.
Most of the qualifying matches and brackets will be completed Friday and Saturday in the Las Vegas Convention Center, however Sunday’s finals will take place in the 12,000-seater Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Last year’s event saw 3.8m unique viewers tune in on Twitch for Street Fighter, Smash Bros, Mortal Kombat X, Killer Instinct and a range of other fighting games.
There were 248,000 people watching as Yusuke Momochi became the final Evo champion of USFIV before it was dropped from the line-up in favour of the recently released SFV this year.
Street Fighter V released last week and is still suffering some server issues hampering online play capabilities.
