UK games development trade association welcomes â?¬1.5m game fund

Tiga: EC games fund “a step in the right direction”

The UK’s game development trade association, Tiga, has welcomed the EC’s move to acknowledge the games industry via its Media Plus scheme.

As we reported earlier today, the EC has now set aside €1.5m to support a variety of games development projects.

"This is a definite step in the right direction," said CEO Fred Hasson (pictured), who is also chairman of EGDF. "There is still a lot of misinformation and negative perceptions circulating Brussels concerning games, but Tiga and the other members of EGDF have held numerous meetings with the European Commission to help redress this perception.

"It seems ironic that the EU should take positive measures for games before the UK government does, who have been telling us that it is because of Brussels that they cannot do anything for the games sector."

Tiga points out that the Media Plus move represents a significant change in perception towards interactive entertainment as it traditionally deals with TV and film producers.
