Nintendo’s E3 Spotlight might have been all about new titles for Switch, but those tuning in to Nintendo’s Treehouse stream will have seen a handful of new 3DS titles as well.
First up was Metroid: Samus Returns, a 3DS reimagining of the 1991 Game Boy original. Co-developed by Nintendo and Castlevania: Mirror of Fate developers MercurySteam, this 3D sidescroller will have brand-new 3D graphics, an enhanced combat system plus loads of new content, including new abilities and a 360-degree Free Aim Mode, bringing the title bang up to date for a modern audience.
The game will arrive on September 15th, alongside two new Amiibo figures featuring Samus Aran and a Metroid. The game will also be compatible with all other Metroid-themed Amiibo, but functionality details will be revealed at a later date.
A special edition of the game will also be available, which includes a physical copy of the game, a sound-selection CD featuring 25 tracks from across the Metroid franchise, and a reversible cover art for the box.
Another new title announced was Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions, an updated version of the GBA original. This comes with a spruced up art style and a brand new mode, the aforementioned Bowser’s Minions.
This additional mode has a completely different battle system to the main game, which sees you take control of goombas and Lakitus to name just a few classic Mario enemies in a more strategic step-up compared to the turn-based RPG system in Superstar Saga.
Two new amiibo will also be arriving in the form of a Goomba and Koopa Troopa, but more details on their release date will be announced soon.
With even more 3DS titles on the way, it’s clear Nintendo’s handheld console is far from being put out to pasture. In addition to these new titles, there’s also Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon coming at Christmas, as well as Miitopia, Hey Pikmin and Kirby’s Blowout Blast coming this summer, Monster Hunter Stories this autumn, plus Culdcept Revolt from NIS America in September.
