Intel has released a free Photoshop extension to deliver superior compression results, at optimized compression speeds.
In the test card shown on the site, a 769K TGA image has been compressed to 257K with no obvious degradation of quality.
It uses the BCn compression method, which optimises textures for real-time use in graphics memory as well as saving disk space, making it a better option than lossless PNG for use in games. Effective texture memory management makes it possible to add more realism to your games without increasing the demands on the hardware. There’s a free code sample to help you handle the BCn format in your game.
