Jagex has announced an upcoming price hike for Old School Runescape which will take effect on June 4th. The increased pricetag will only affect players who have been unsubscribed for at least 14 days, or newcomers to the game. Anyone currently subscribed will continue to pay their current rate.
In an FAQ about the move the developer mentions several reasons why this price hike is taking place. Continued development and support of the game, which is solely subscription based and features no in-game microtransactions, is the main one. Alongside that, however, Brexit and inflation are blamed, too.
“We are continuing to invest in RuneScape, and the price increase is one part of assuring RuneScape’s future for many years to come,” the FAQ states. “Additionally, economic factors such as Brexit and fluctuations in the value of currencies meant that we needed to review the pricing structure for our games.”
Despite being ancient, Old School Runescape continues to receive new content and new features. Beta invitations for the iOS version have been sent out to 5000+ players, which will change the way they interact with the game. Jagex suspects 2018 will be “the best year yet for Old School [Runescape]”.
