Publishing rights for Alan Wake ‘revert’ to Remedy

Remedy Entertainment has confirmed it has regained the publishing rights for Alan Wake from Microsoft. In a press release to investors, Remedy said the deal will see the company generate €2.5m in royalties for “previously-released games as a one-time income”.

“For its first half-year period of 2019, Remedy Entertainment Plc records approximately 2.5 million euros of royalties from previously released games as one-time income,” a press release said (thanks, Eurogamer). “The royalties are paid to Remedy during the second half-year period of 2019. In relation to this, the publishing rights of Alan Wake games are reverted to Remedy.

“This one-time income does not significantly affect Remedy’s full-year result, because as previously reported, the Company continues to invest in developing new games, the success of which have a greater impact on the Company’s full-year revenue and result.”

While known for its story-led single-player titles, Finnish outfit Remedy recently confirmed it has established Remedy Vanguard, a small team working within the studio focused on prototyping, developing, and eventually shipping “new types of ongoing live multiplayer game experiences”.

“The small ‘Vanguard’ development team will act with a startup mentality within the stability of a large company,” Remedy said at the time. “Its mission is to challenge conventions and to prototype and ship new types of ongoing live multiplayer game experiences, alongside our established and growing core game development teams and the Northlight technology group.”

Remedy will still focus on its story-led single-player output in the large part, with the upcoming Control reportedly adopting a more traditional approach.

A group of veteran game developers from Remedy and Wargaming recently joined together in Helsinki to form new studio, Redhill Games. Matias Myllyrinne – former CEO of Remedy Entertainment – takes up position as the new CEO after working as head of global development for Wargaming since 2015.

Former lawyer and head of HR and chief of staff for global development at Wargaming Katya Dolgova joins Myllyrinne as COO, with Redhill Games’ “core leadership team” filled by CTO Mikko Uromo – a former technical director at Wargaming and Remedy – and executive producer Milos Jerabek, who was development director of World of Tanks at Wargaming and also served as production director at Remedy. The studio itself will be populated “with talent hand-picked from around the world from companies like Guerrilla Games, Starbreeze, Next Games and more”.
