Barbie goes tomb raiding with new movie tie-in

Mattel has revealed a brand new Barbie Tomb Raider doll, based on Alicia Vikander’s portrayal of Lara Croft. The doll comes packaged with various accessories, including a map, axe, journal, doll stand and a certificate of authenticity.

A reboot of the Tomb Raider movie franchise will debut in cinemas on March 16th, 2018. The film is thematically consistent with the Tomb Raider reboot which launched in 2013. Which essentially makes this the Barbie of the film of the game – we truly live in an age of brand extension.

The leg and arm wounds and the pick axe are quite a step away from most consumer’s perception of Barbie. Yes, the doll has stepped expanded out from the core character over the years, but the Tomb raider figure certainly doesn’t sit naturally alongside the still pink dominated line-up.

We’re yet to see the final rating for the movie, though the trailers got 12A certification, and we’d expect it to be a 12 at least. Either way the doll is clearly aimed at collectors rather than six-year old girls.

Presale for the doll has kicked off on Barbie.com, retailing for $29.99.
