Fortnite Battle Royale hits 525,000 concurrent players, with 3.7m daily active users

Fortnite’s new Battle Royale variant has only been around for a couple of weeks, but Epic Games took to Twitter yesterday to announce that the mode has already hit 525,000 concurrent players. 

Fortnight Battle Royale is a completely free mode that’s anyone can download and play, only tangentially related to the base game which is a craft ‘em up survival game that had some muddy messaging and launched to a muted reception. However on the same weekend it achieved 525,000 concurrent players, it also attracted 3.7m daily active users.

It seems the battle royal genre is here to stay, with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite both seemingly coexisting with massive player numbers. This weekend, Battlegrounds nearly hit 2m concurrent players on Steam and it looks certain that that number will be hit, which felt like an unreal possibility just a few months ago. Fortnite has been given a boost no doubt by managing to beat the incredibly successful Battlegrounds to consoles, giving it easy access to an untapped battle royale audience. 

For Fortnite, this jump to Battle Royale seems to have reinvigorated the game, which only had 1m players on its release and has reached all-time high player counts since it’s last man standing iteration. 

Fancy trying it out? It’s free, so there’s nothing stopping you. From a business point of view, we should start seeing Fortnite esports competitions starting up soon, and it should indicate that investments and gambles on battle royale games seem to be safer than at first thought. 

Unlike the classic Sparks song, it appears that the gaming town that Fortnite Battle Royale and PUBG inhabit is big enough for the both of them.
