Xbox designers enjoy record Kickstarter success with card game Exploding Kittens

A new card game created by two Xbox designers has set the world of crowdfunding alight.

Exploding Kittens is co-created by former Xbox chief design officer Elan Lee, former Xbox Entertainment principle art director Shane Small and The Oatmeal creator Matt Inman.

Having sought just $10k in funding the game currently stands at an incredible $3.26m. It was 100 per cent funded within 20 minutes of going live earlier this week and 1000 per cent funded in under an hour.

After two days it stood as the 22nd most funded Kickstarter ever, the 11th best funded game and the highest funded card game. That’s more funding than the Oculus Rift received.

Production of the game is simple: it’s just a card game, so other than building the box it’s a relatively straightforward product to make,” an explanation posted before the extent of its success became apparent reads. The biggest challenge for us could be fulfilment (which we’re addressing by working with our pals at Cards Against Humanity).

None of us want this to be a campaign where you spend the next two years getting fifty emails about production updates and delays. We want you to back this project, and then within a few weeks of the campaign ending you’ll get your stuff in the mail. This is why (for now) we’re not offering t-shirts or other complicated reward tiers that would make the distribution process take a lot longer. We’re keeping it as simple as possible: support our project and in return we’ll send you the playable game.”
