Cloud9, the North American esports outfit, has signed a Rocket League team previously known as The Muffin Men.
The three man team, who have just snatched a Rocket League victory at Dreamhack Atlanta 2017 last week, are comprised of Americans Kyle ‘Torment’ Storer and Jesus ‘Gimmick’ Parra, in addition to Canadian Mariano ‘SquishyMuffinz’ Arruda.
“Over the last two years Rocket League has stormed onto the scene as a fun, accessible esport for everyone.” said Danan Flander, Cloud9’s general manager in a statement on Cloud9’s website. “We began talks with The Muffin Men before this last DreamHack and their stellar performance solidified our interest. Happy to have them on board as yet another top team on Cloud9.”
The release also praised the team’s consistent results, highlighting wins as ESL Monthly Champions and Beyond Entertainment Champions. The hope is that the players will become a “dominant presence” in competitive Rocket League.
Storer added “We’ve been fans of their teams in other games for a long time and really respect them. We look forward to bringing our success in Rocket League to Cloud9.”
This is Cloud9’s 11th concurrent sports team, in addition to a number of streamers working with the organisation. With a mass of Rocket League tournaments surfacing in recent months, it’s hard to be surprised that more big organisations are taking a risk on the motorised futuresport.
