Nintendo has released its three-months earnings report for the period ending June 30th 2017, and we now know the Switch has sold 4.7m units worldwide to date.
Between April and June, the Switch sold another 1.97m pieces of hardware, while total software sales topped 8.14m units. Of that figure, a large part came from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales, which was the biggest-selling title of the quarter with 3.54m units worldwide. That includes both physical and digital download figures. Of that figure 0.69m units were sold in Japan, with the remaining 2.85m coming from overseas.
ARMS took second place, selling 1.18m units worldwide, with Nintendo saying the title is "off to a good start." Indeed, Nintendo’s new fighting game outsold The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which shifted another 1.16m units worldwide. To date, however, Zelda reigns supreme, selling 3.92m units worldwide. That means 83 per cent of Switch owners have a copy of Zelda, and 75 per cent of Switch owners have bought a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
The 3DS, meanwhile, sold another 0.95m hardware units – an increase of one per cent year-on-year – but overall software sales fell by 31 per cent year-on-year to 5.85m for the period.
On the digital side of the business, Nintendo said digital sales of packaged software and downloadable content for Switch "showed steady growth," with total digital sales increasing 41 per cent year-on-year to 11bn.
Consumers are also "continuing to enjoy" Nintendo’s smartphone portfolio, such as Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes, with smart device and IP related income hitting 9bn. That’s an increase of 450 per cent year-on-year.
As a result, Nintendo’s net sales for the quarter reached 154bn, of which overseas sales made up 113.8bn, or 73.9 per cent of total sales.
