Volition and Outrage creators Mike Kulas and Matt Toschlog crowdfunding $300,000 for Overload

Parallax founders get back together for Descent successor

One of the most iconic shooters of the 1990s is coming back, courtesy of its original creators.

Mike Kulas and Matt Toschlog created the ‘six degrees of freedom’ title 22 years ago under the banner of Parallax Software.

Three years after the studio was founded, the founders went their separate ways, splitting Parallax into Red Faction and Saints Row develop Volition, led by Kulas, and Alter Echo creator Outrage, helmed by Toschlog.

The two found themselves back together in 2002 after the now-extinct THQ purchased Outrage, two years after acquiring Volition.

Now, the partnership is bringing their defining opus back in the form of a spiritual successor called Overload. And surprise, surprise: it has a Kickstarter.

Kulas and Toschlog’s new studio, Revival Productions, is seeking $300,000 for the title, which it has reportedly been developing since 2014. As a result, the core of the game is already finished, with the extra money going towards balancing and a wider array of content.

Set for release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, Overload will include a 15-level single-player campaign, five difficulty levels, 12 weapons, more than 12 enemy types and three bosses. Stretch goals include Mac and Linux versions.

Overload is slated for release in March 2017.
