Sony announced today that God of War has become the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive, having shifted over 3.1m copies during its first three days on shelves, from April 20th to April 22nd.
Sony Santa Monica’s title debuted at the top of the UK charts, to rather underwhelming sales. The sunny weather coupled with the game being unavailable on Amazon for a while could explain this launch performance, especially since the game did really well during its second week, with sales only decreasing 35 per cent.
Sony’s figures now confirm that God of War had a strong launch: as a comparison, last year’s big PS4 exclusive, Horizon Zero Dawn, sold 2.6m units in two weeks.
The 3.1m figure for God of War was announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s VP of marketing Asad Qizilbash in a blog post, with studio head Shannon Studstill commenting: “I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us. Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play.
"I’d also like to thank our creative director, Cory Barlog, and director of product development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favourite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time.”
Earlier this year, we talked to Sony’s product manager Jon Edwards about marketing an established franchise as a reboot and how the publisher hopes to expand the God of War fanbase with the most mature title in the series to date. You can read it here.
