It seems Hazelight’s A Way Out has sold beyond EA’s expectations. The Swedish developer announced on Twitter on Friday that the co-up title has sold more than one million units in just over two weeks (it released on March 23rd). Since only one person in each pair of players needs to have bought the game, that means up to 2 million people might have played it.
Here’s the tweet in its natural habitat:
We just found out that #AWayOut has sold over 1 million copies, in just over two weeks! Words cannot describe how much this means to us. Thank you to all of you for your support!

And here’s the reaction of A Way Out’s writer and director Josef Fares:
HOLY SHIT, this means that 2 million players have played the game. Thank you so much❤️ https://t.co/W8WP6HI44Z

As Kotaku pointed out, EA only expected to sell 203,000 copies by the end of the 2018 fiscal year (March 31st) and 894,000 copies total. This forecast was part of internal EA documents that leaked in August last year.
Hazelight’s A Way Out is published on the EA Originals label, which sees the developer get 100 per cent of the profit once the title has covered its costs.
The co-op game was announced back at E3 2017 and debuted at No.2 in the UK weekly charts a few weeks back.
