id signs up for Valve’s Steam service

Valve’s Steam service has once again boosted its portfolio of downloadable content by signing up fellow developer id and a raft of its games.

The complete series of Doom games, the first three installments of the Quake franchise, PC side-scroller Commander Keen and the likes of Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Heretic, and HeXen are all available for consumers to download.

"Valve pioneered digital delivery of video games with Steam," commented Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, in the official announcement.

"As a game developer themselves, Valve understands what developers and game players want and need in an online distribution system, and Steam delivers."

"We can’t overstate our admiration for id, its games, and the technical advancements the company has delivered to help move the industry forward during the past 15 years," added Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve.

"Like many other studios, Valve was born when we licensed the Quake engine to build our first game. We’re proud to welcome id to Steam and give people around the world an easy way to play the games that have inspired everyone here at Valve."

Valve continues to drive forward activity behind Steam – along with signings from major publishers such as Activision and Capcom, plus plenty of support for smaller developers and independents, the studio recently announced it was overhauling the service by adding new community features.
