Tesco to open department store chain

Supermarket giant Tesco plans to build a chain of department stores in town centres across the country, designed to rival the likes of Debenhams, Marks and Spencer and BHS, according to a document obtained by Property Week.

The shops will concentrate on non-food ranges such as clothing, homewares and toys. And judging by Tesco’s bullish statements to MCV regarding its plans for video game expansion in 2008, the new stores could well see large areas dedicated to the market as well.

Apparently, the first of the new stores, which Tesco describes as ‘a whole new concept’ will appear in High Wycombe.
