Viewer numbers soar for The Game Awards

Live stream numbers for last week’s The Game Awards were up by around 60 per cent compared to 2015’s show.

Polygon reports that viewers clocked up 3.8m live streamed of the event, up from the 2.3m seen the year before and the 1.9m in 2014.

The jump was in part credited to Tencent’s streaming of the show in China, which boosted numbers by around one million.

Furthermore, throughout the ceremony the #thegameawards hashtag was the top trending worldwide. Clips from the show were watched over 15m times across social media.

"It was encouraging to see audience growth both domestically and abroad for The Game Awards 2016,” show creator Geoff Keighley said. Our goal is to bring this show to as many gamers as possible, and this unique distribution approach continues to pay dividends. The interest and response to the show in China was especially exciting to see."
