Microsoft’s yearly technology challenge, the Imagine Cup, has for the first time added a game development category to its line-up.
The Imagine Cup is aimed at harnessing the creative talents of youngsters to develop technology solutions to real-world problems. This year’s theme is the environment, calling young programmers, artists and technologists to ‘imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment’.
The newly added Game Development category, called the Xbox 360 Games for Change Challenge, tasks students with making a game that, while still entertaining, has a social message about global warming.
Challengers will use XNA Game Studio Express to create their games, and the winners of the competition will receive not only cash prizes but the opportunity to come to Microsoft and present the idea for possible distribution via MSN’s Games website or Xbox Live Arcade. The team or individual that comes in first place will also have the chance to be an intern at Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business.
More information on the competition can be found at the official website.
