Precision Position Tracking system will support up to 10 users in a 50x50m space, and is compatible with any Unreal Engine 4 or Unity 5 device

Forget Vive’s room-scale VR, WorldViz is working on ‘warehouse-scale’ tech

HTC’s Vive headset allows VR users to walk around in a space up to 15×15 feet big. Now, a new tech company wants to take ‘room-scale’ virtual reality to new limits – literally.

WorldViz has announced its plans to launch a VR system covering more than ten times the maximum space supported by Vive, or: ‘warehouse-scale’.

The Precision Position Tracking technology is said to support play environments measuring up to 50 by 50 metres – or 164×164 feet.

To help fill the space, up to ten separate users or objects will be trackable at the same time, with precision down to sub-millimetre levels.

Powering the ambitious platform are 240Hz tracking cameras, in unison with sensors on the players’ headsets and ‘wand’ motion controllers.

On the software side, from June onwards WorldViz’ PPT Studio will support any headset able to run Unity 5 or Unreal Engine 4 applications – including the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, Gear VR and Google’s recently-announced Daydream.
