More details about Microsoft upgraded Xbox One have emerged online.
Now Polygon adds that Xbox Scorpio (codename) has a performance target of 6 teraflops. For comparison, Sony’s soon-to-be-announced PS4 Neo has a peak performance of 4.14 teraflops. Microsoft is apparently determined to bring an end to PlayStation’s performance advantage over its platform.
(Xbox One has a peak performance of 1.32 teraflops and the vanilla PS4 1.84 teraflops).
It adds that Microsoft’s plans for the machine are in flux” and that an E3 announcement was not initially planned. However, when it became clear that Sony was to use the event to unveil PS4 Neo, things were altered and the announcement shoved forwards.
There are those within the company, however, who are nervous about announcing a new machine that could lead to some disillusionment with the current model. Sony seems to have forced this play, regardless.
Scorpio will, like Sony’s new machine, be more of an iterative upgrade rather than a generation change, and will fully support all Xbox One games. Future games will also support both platforms.
Of the rumoured Oculus Rift support, Polygon suggests that while it will be technically possible, there are not yet plans for any sort of official support or further cooperation between the pair.
The site also claims that the Xbox One Slim will be 40 per cent smaller than the current machine and include 4K video support, although it is also suggested that an in-built scaler might be employed to upscale any content to 4K. It will also be the smallest Xbox ever made, and could be released in August.
