The past 12 months have been a turbulent time for the games industry with thousands of jobs being lost as companies restructure and downsize following rapid growth in the sector during the pandemic. My heart goes out to all those affected, and I know that losing a job doesn’t just have a financial impact – it can also have a serious effect on confidence and certainty.
The games industry is one of the fastest moving when it comes to innovation and creativity, but that sometimes brings with it certain challenges as the sector moves through peaks and troughs of cycles. The past year has been one of the toughest for many people, but looking forward, there are more positive times ahead. Studios are continuing to grow, and – without a doubt – games is still the best entertainment industry to be in for the long term!
Whether you have found yourself looking for a new role for the first time in a number of years, or if you’re ready to make your first move into the games industry, we’re always here to get you ready for your next opportunity. I hope that some of these tips will help:
Update Your CV and LinkedIn Profile: Highlight your accomplishments, skills, and experiences. It might be worth considering tailoring your CV for each job application to align with the specific job requirements.
Network and Seek Support: Reach out to your professional network for support and advice. Networking can lead to job opportunities that may not be publicly advertised. Attend industry events, join online communities, and reconnect with former colleagues. Remember that many people have experienced redundancy at some point in their careers, and they can offer valuable insights and encouragement.
Set Clear Goals and Prioritise: Determine the type of job you want, the studios you’re interested in, and the locations you’re open to. Prioritise your goals to stay focused and organised during your job search.
Enhance Your Skills: Maybe take advantage of this period to enhance your skills or acquire new ones. Online courses and workshops can make you a more attractive candidate to potential employers. Show your commitment to personal and professional development by investing in yourself.
Practice Interview Techniques: Prepare for interviews by practicing your responses to common interview questions. Research the studios you’re interviewing with and be ready to ask questions about the organisation.
