The Switch-exclusive JRPG Octopath Traveler has sold one million copies worldwide, hitting the milestone in just under one month after its launch. This figure includes both physical and digital sales.
Nintendo UK celebrated the achievement in a Tweet, thanking fans for their support and saying that “the developers at Square Enix would like to thank you for making this possible.”
The game has found remarkable success worldwide, having debuted at No.3 in the UK sales charts on its launch week. The RPG is especially popular in Japan, however, with the title having sold out in the country just a day after its release, as Eurogamer reported. As new physical copies were made available, the demand continued to be insatiable, with the second shipment of copies selling out in a matter of hours.
Octopath Traveler has also fared well in the digital sales, having topped the Switch eShop sales charts worldwide. Its success follows its release to critical acclaim, averaging at 84 per cent on Metacritic, with critics praising the game as a “gem from the golden age of JRPGs.”
This news also comes on the heels of the increasing success of Japanese titles in the West. Both the Persona and the Yakuza series have seen an increase in popularity outside of Japan recently.
Last year, the increasing success of Japanese titles in the West prompted publisher Atlus to publish more of their titles in Europe. Their titles have seen such an increased success that new Sega of America president and COO Ian Curran noted the strong sales of Persona and Yakuza in a statement released by Sega.
According to Sega’s March financial results, Persona 5 has sold 2.2 million copies worldwide since its 2016 release. As Octopath Traveler was just released last month, it seems likely that it should exceed this figure.
