E3 2007: Take 2 revs up hype for GTA IV

In new CEO Strauss Zelnick’s first E3 presentation, Take 2 concentrated on its forthcoming Grand Theft Auto update, with the chairman telling the crowd that he wants his firm to become the most innovative” in the US.

Zelnick didn’t make much reference to the firm’s recent financial troubles – but said that Take-2’s main goal is simply to deliver excellent gameplay.

The presentation as the first public showing of GTA IV, and the preview featured ‘highly-detailed buildings and an overall realistic, gritty version of an alternate-reality New York City’, according to

The firm revealed that the title will be More like a successor to GTA III” than a straight follow-up to San Andreas, but didn’t show off any in-game action.

Console title Civilization: Revolution was then demonstrated to the audience. The title, which is the latest in the traditionally PC-based Sid Meier series, won a warm reception – not least because of the in-game humour on show.

Meier said that Revolution is a great opportunity for a designer to start out with a blank sheet of paper”, adding that all concepts” from the Civilization series are included in the new iteration.

Along with other games such as All-Pro Football, the publisher previewed upcoming gory FPS Bioshock, with developer Irrational Games on hand to walk the crowd through the title.
