South Korea wins three world championship titles in 24 hours

Teams from South Korea were over the weekend crowned the world champions in three top esports.

As previously reported, firstly Samsung Galaxy (SSG) claimed the League of Legends Worlds tournament after defeating fellow South Korean outfit SK Telecom T1 (SKT) 3-0. SSG had to come through a tough bracket to get there, defeating favourites Longzhou Gaming in the quarter-final matchup 3-0 before cruising to victory against SKT, winning them around $1.7m in prize money in the process.

Note that this is the first series SKT, who are the three-time defending champions, has ever lost at Worlds. Just last year they beat SSG 3-2 in a close final.

Secondly, South Korea successfully defended its World Champion title in Overwatch’s 2017 World Cup Finals, after a 3-1 win over Canada. The team was absolutely dominant in the group stages leading up to Blizzcon, although it faced a bit of a struggle in the quarter final against the United States, where they eventually emerged as 3-1 winners after some close games

Topping it all off, South Korean team MVP Black triumphed over Fnatic in the Heroes of the Storm HGC Finals, reversing their semi-final defeat to Fnatic in 2017. Both teams had won 3-0 in the semis this time out, although MVP Black entered the event on a terrific run of form.
